Garry Stevens No Comments

Following a request from recently retired Councillor Scott Carle, the Burgesses are pleased to supportr the following request for an external trustee to sit on the Trustee Board of the Aberdeen University Students Association.

Details below,

External Trustee Position

Aberdeen University Students’ Association (AUSA) is a member-led charity representing the students of Aberdeen University in all aspects of their university life from academic advice and student representation, to acting as a link between students and their community via volunteering opportunities, charities and community work.  AUSA supports over 150 societies and 55 sports clubs and is the voice for students to improve their student experience.

We are currently recruiting an external trustee to sit on our Trustee Board.  As an external trustee you will work alongside the 5 full time student officers, 2 other external Trustees, one University appointed Trustee and four student trustees.

For this role we are looking for an individual who has extensive experience in financial management at a senior/strategic level. Ideally the candidate will have previous experience of working on a board of trustees for another charity, or of working or volunteering for a charity in the student or other relevant sector.

These roles are voluntary and as such will receive no remuneration other than out of pocket expenses.

To apply, please provide a full C.V and a supporting statement demonstrating how you meet the Trustee person specification and you relevant knowledge and experience to:  Scott Carle, Representative Services Manager, Aberdeen University Students’ Association by email to scott.carle@abdn.ac.uk. For informal enquiries, please call 01224 274156.

Alford visit via Vintage Bus

Garry Stevens No Comments

On a lovely sunny evening on Wednesday 24th May,  26 Burgesses boarded a vintage bus being driven by Assessor Joe Mackie to the Grampian Transport Museum and Vintage bus collection at Alford. They were given excellent tours of both and a buffet supper before heading home on the bus. Feedback from the event has been that it was one of the most enjoyable events recently undertaken. Thanks go to Joe and the staff at Alford (all volunteers) for making the event so enjoyable. The Lord Dean of Guild presented a cheque for £100 to the museum and a certificate from the Burgesses confirming the visit.

Garry Stevens No Comments

The Annual Aberdeen City Council budget briefing to the Burgesses was well attended on the evening of Wednesday 22 March in the Council Chamber. Chaired by the Lord Dean of Guild, Angela Scott, Chief Executive, and Steven Whyte, Head of Finance gave the Burgesses a detailed overview of the current budget situation in the Council and the plans moving forward to meet the budget pressures which affect all Local Authorities in Scotland. Steve and Angela also took questions from the Burgesses on conclusion of the presentation. Angela then gave an overview of a “day in the life of a Returning Officer” an additional duty she undertakes as Chief Executive and one which she will shortly be undertaking for the Local Elections in May.

At the conclusion of the evening the Lord Dean thanked Angela and Steve for their time to present to the Burgesses.

Paul Mealor and Friends Evening

Garry Stevens No Comments

Almost 80 Burgesses of Guild, partners and friends enjoyed an excellent evening on Tuesday 27th February  with Burgess Prof Paul Mealor and friends, vocalist Jillian Bain Christie and pianist Drew Tulloch. Lord Dean of Guild Colin Taylor undertook a Q & A session with Paul reflecting on his childhood in North Wales, his work with Royalty and of course his partnership with Gareth Malone on the Military Wives composition of “Wherever you are”. Intertwined with Jillian and Drew performing  versions Ubi Caritas from William and Kate’s wedding, Wherever you are, and Ae Fond Kiss by Robert Burns, it was a very enjoyable evening.

The Lord Dean gave a vote of thanks to Aberdeen University for allowing the event to be hosted there, and presented Paul with a set of Burgess of Guild Coasters, Jillian and Drew with a bottle of their favourite tipple.

Selection of photos below show Paul answering questions from the Lord Dean, Jillian and Drew performing a song, and their presentation by the Lord Dean of Guild.

Future Social events and Lunches for the forthcoming months are now detailed on the website.
