The Burgesses of Aberdeen have a long history much of which
is coming to life through the Aberdeen Burgh Records Project which is a
collaboration between the University of Aberdeen, the Aberdeen City and
Aberdeenshire Archives and the National Records of Scotland.
This has been in place since 2012 and a Leverhulme-funded project ‘Law in the
Aberdeen Council Registers 1398-1511’ has focussed on the first eight volumes
of the Aberdeen Council Registers. It might be considered that these
are the Burgesses’ records.
One of the matters of interest brought to our attention is
that in the 1490’s the town employed two Minstrels and ‘the Council assigned
£10 to these Common Minstrels to be taken from the Deans of Guild to pay for
their passage to a feast where they may play to the pleasure of His Majesty’.
Fast forward 500 years or so, bring Guests, and join Fellow
Burgesses in an evening with a difference. This promises to be an evening
like no other.
Dr. Claire Hawes and Dr. William Hepburn from the University
will set the scene before we introduce two modern-day Minstrels who will play
for you, to entertain ‘right royally’.

Burgess Mike Gibb has a national tour of his play Doorways to Drumorty. The play is an adaption of the book of short stories (which was banned for fifty years in Strichen as everyone recognised themselves!) in the imaginary Drumorty (based on the birth place of writer Lorna Moon). It is by turns funny and sad and moving and was very well received by audiences around Scotland on its two previous tours. We have secured a block booking for Burgesses and guests.
The play will begin at 7.30 and should finish at 9.30 with a 20-minute interval. Refreshments will be served immediately after the show with members of the cast attending.

advances in sleep neurobiology answering questions about sleep functions and
