Dr Olga Runcie – Sleep Talk

Garry Stevens No Comments

Over 40 Burgesses attended an excellent evening with Guest Speaker Dr Olga Runcie. In her talk Dr Runcie who currently works at Albyn-BMI hospital and ROC Private clinic in Aberdeen, discussed advances in sleep neurobiology answering questions about sleep functions and mechanisms of sleep and wake control. Those who attended will hopefully have learnt how to use this knowledge to improve their sleep.

Olga has kindly provided a fact sheet to help highlight sleep issues and how to use techniques etc to improve sleep patterns. Please click on the link below to view it.

As always a huge thanks to the staff at the Aberdeenshire Cricket Club for their excellent hospitality and catering.

Football Memories Project

Garry Stevens No Comments

Places are still available for the event below, we are also pleased to confirm that Gothenburg Great Neil Simpson will accompany Alan Johnstone, with hopefully some medals to show everyone. Neil has attended a couple of Alan’s sessions and is very supportive of the programme.

Wednesday 30th October – 6,30pm start – £15 pp guests welcome, Aberdeenshire Cricket Club, Mannofield.

The Football Memories project was piloted in Scotland ten years ago, with Aberdeen one of four participating centres and formally launched in 2010. The aim was to improve the quality of life of those affected by dementia by using football memorabilia to trigger personal memories and stories, enabling people to participate in group discussion and enjoy 90 minutes of fun and laughter. The project has been a great success, with over 300 groups now established, meeting at football grounds, care homes, sheltered housing, libraries and other venues. A more inclusive approach has been adopted, with those affected by other conditions such as social isolation now welcomed into groups. Scotland is recognised as being internationally-leading on this initiative and Aberdeen retains a prominent position within our national network.
Retired accountant and fellow Burgess, Alan Johnstone is the Scottish Football Memories Area Co-Ordinator for Aberdeen City and Shire and volunteers with several local organisations, including Alzheimer Scotland supporting their football memories groups. He will talk about the development of the project, his personal experiences over the past three years and look at the significant opportunities for expansion within Aberdeen. A selection of footballing memorabilia will be on display so you may wish to take your shooting boots with you!”

Pleased to advise that Art Gallery Manager and fellow Burgesses Christine Rew has an invite to Burgesses (sorry no partners/friends as space is limited – if this changes I can advise) to view the new refurbished Art Gallery:

I’d like to offer all Burgesses a special opportunity to view the Art Gallery on the afternoon of 1 NOVEMBER between 2 and 4pm. We’re not able to provide a guided tour as such, but all galleries will be open and the Burgesses will be welcome to make their way around the building. Members of staff will be on hand to answer any questions and refreshments will be served. I very much hope that a number of Burgesses will be able to come along and that you will be able to take up this opportunity.
